Recently, PaintGreen’s founder and owner, Jon Ray, had the opportunity to be interviewed on The Buildsters’ podcast. The Buildsters is an organization that has created a network of home improvement professionals, who they then connect with homeowners who are looking for experienced, qualified, and licensed contractors. The interview is part of their “Built to Last” series of podcasts, where they talk to some of the best business owners in the San Diego area.

We were excited that Jon was invited to share the PaintGreen story with The Buildsters’ audience and talk about what sets PaintGreen apart from other San Diego house painting companies.

When asked what he considers the biggest contributor to the success of PaintGreen, Jon said it’s taking really good care of customers. He elaborated on this by saying, “If you do a good job and fulfill all your promises that you make up front, people like that and appreciate that. They tell their neighbors and they tell their friends and it just grows from there.” In other words, it’s the classic word-of-mouth advertising that has led to much of the growth PaintGreen has seen over the past 15 years.

Jon then talks about how he is being intentional about growing his painting company organically, as well as how he is focusing on putting good systems in place to make sure customers are happy and the quality of the work remains high. Jon explains that in the early days of PaintGreen, he was focused on growing quickly and becoming the biggest house painting company in San Diego. Now, he is more interested in sustainable growth.

Knowing that great communication is key in the home improvement industry, the interviewer asks Jon what PaintGreen’s communication process looks like with its customers. Jon talks about the initial consultation he has with every customer—how he spends a good amount of time at the home and asks a lot of questions to make sure everyone is on the same page. He then documents everything in the bid, laying out specifics like what products will be used, what’s included in the scope of work, and what isn’t.

The interviewer also asks Jon about his approach to hiring new employees at PaintGreen. Jon explains that he first looks for professionalism and integrity in the people he hires, because, he says, you can teach people everything they need to know about painting, but you can’t teach them how to be good employees and good people.

When asked if Jon had any advice for someone thinking about starting a business, Jon says, “Do it!” He cautions that it’s a lot of work and there’s a lot of problem solving involved, but if you can stick with it, it’s very rewarding.

We’d like to thank The Buildsters for taking the time to interview Jon, so their listeners can learn more about PaintGreen and our approach to business.
